GALION – Galion Building and Loan Bank continued its support of education in the Galion community with its donation of calculators to Galion Middle School on Tuesday, December 7. This is the thirtieth year that the bank has made this donation to sixth graders.

The board of trustees, along with bank president Don Barr, chose to form a partnership with Galion Middle School in 1992. The goal was to have a positive impact on the education of every GMS student.

“The program started when former GMS maths teacher Ms Patti Miller suggested that calculators be provided to every sixth grader,” said Jody Fraley, representative of Galion Building and Loan. “She thought having a calculator would give every student the equipment they needed to be successful in math.”

Students received a Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS calculator, which is the official calculator for the Ohio Graduation Test.

“Galion Building and Loan Bank has distributed 6,180 calculators to Galion students since 1992,” Fraley said. “The calculator the students received is approved for the Ohio Achievement Test, Ohio Graduation Test (OGT), ACT, and SAT, and is a very versatile model and should follow students through high school and to college.”

The calculators were distributed to the students during a brief presentation assembly at GMS. Each calculator is engraved with the student’s name and is affixed with a sticker that includes the name of the bank and a statement declaring the bank’s concern for the education of our young people.

“I would like to thank Don Barr, Jody Fraley, the bank’s board of directors and the entire staff of Galion Building and Loan Bank for this generous donation,” said Jennifer Allerding, superintendent of Galion City schools. “We appreciate their continued commitment to providing resources to help our students reach their highest possible level.”

In addition to the annual calculator donation, Galion Building and Loan Bank also makes an annual presentation to all Galion first-graders on “Teach Children to Save Day.” Students receive a Billy Buck piggy bank and learn the importance of saving money during the presentation. The bank also supported Junior Achievement in Galion City schools by sending volunteers into classrooms to teach children about business.
