Indy Youth Build Program Accepting Build Certification Applications – WISH-TV | Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather forecast
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Employ Indy merges education and commerce through its youth development program.
Not only will youth earn construction certification, but they’ll earn their General Education Development diploma, cash, and AmeriCorps volunteer hours. With construction jobs set to soar, representatives say now is the time to act.
Over the next five years, as construction workers retire or age, approximately 700 construction jobs will become available around Indianapolis. The Youth Development Program is a learning opportunity and a chance to earn money and help the community.
Employ Indy is again calling for new recruits for its youth building program. For more than a dozen years, he has helped groom the next batch of construction workers in Indianapolis.
“There are an abundance of construction jobs in and around our region, and this is a great opportunity for any young person looking to enter the industry,” said Rodney Francis, program director.
He said that in just a few years people leaving the construction industry will leave the door open for countless young people to choose a trade and take on around 700 jobs.
“There is a serious talent gap between their current staff and the demand for what they need,” Francis said.
The Youth Build program runs from late September to early March, and it’s special.
“They give back in so many ways. They learn. They grow up. They build their lives, melt like they lay the foundations of houses for other people,” Francis said.
Officials say construction is one of five industries that boost the local economy. For many, it is a way to build economic mobility.
The deadline to register is September 9.
