When is Mardi Gras 2023? Mark your calendars for Carnival and another holiday to collide. | Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras purple, green and gold have returned for Fat Tuesday on March 1, 2022, with new coronavirus-related throws: free COVID-19 masks and tests.

For the next two years, however, Easter will not be the only Mardi Gras-related holiday. Next year’s Mardi Gras will fall on February 21, 2023, a week after Valentine’s Day.

Mardi Gras in 2024 will fall on February 13, a day before Valentine’s Day, further bridging the gap between carnival season and the celebration of romance.

Mardi Gras fell once on February 13 in 2018.

Carnival goers can always expect Mardi Gras to fall on a different day each year.

Why isn’t Mardi Gras on the same day?

Mardi Gras revolves around Easter, which does not occur on the same day each year. Buckle up, because this calculation involves math, astronomy, and religion.

Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first ecclesiastical full moon which occurs on or after the vernal equinox, March 21.

This means that Easter can never take place before March 22 or after April 25.

What is an ecclesiastical full moon?

The US Naval Observatory’s Astronomical Applications Department explains that “the full moon involved is not the astronomical full moon but an ecclesiastical moon (determined from the tables of the Catholic Church) which remains, more or less, in phase with the astronomical full moon”.

So what does this have to do with Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras takes place 47 days before Easter and falls on a Tuesday between February 3 and March 9. Both of these dates are very special, as Mardi Gras will only fall on them once in a lifetime, each occurring approximately once every 100 to 150 years. Learn more here.

Mardi Gras is also the eve of Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, which the Catholic Church and some Protestant churches observe before Easter as a time of repentance, marked by fasting, abstinence, prayer, and almsgiving. .

Here is the Mardi Gras program for the next few years:

  • 2025: March 4
  • 2026: February 17
  • 2027: February 9
  • 2028: February 29
